Bomb threat email campaign | Stay Smart Online

What’s happened?

Stay Smart Online is aware of bomb threat blackmail emails being sent globally including to Australians and Australian organisations. The emails threaten that a bomb will be detonated in the recipient’s building, unless a ransom payment of bitcoin is made.

The emails are likely to be a scam and Australian authorities are investigating whether they are valid threats or not.

Does it affect me?

These emails have been sent to individuals, organisations and government agencies in Australia, as well as people overseas.

How do I stay safe?

If you receive one of these emails, you should follow your organisation’s internal procedures for bomb threats or contact your local police.

  • Do not respond or try to contact the sender.
  • Do not pay the ransom.
  • Keep the email as evidence to give to the police if needed.
